Practice for lesson 18 of 18, 9 problems
Practice: Rational equations that lead to linear equations
Rational equation practice problems with solutions: excluded values, clearing denominators, cross-multiplying, extraneous solutions and a work-rate problem.
Review the lessonWork each problem out on paper before you open the solution. If your answer is off, compare the steps and find where you went wrong. If a problem stops you cold, go back to the lesson: every set links to it.

Practice 8Quick check
What is the solution of \(\frac{4}{x - 1} = 2\)?
\(4 = 2(x - 1)\), so \(x - 1 = 2\) and \(x = 3\).
Practice 9Quick check
Solving a rational equation with excluded value \(x \neq 2\), the only answer you get is \(x = 2\). What does that mean?
An answer that makes a denominator zero is extraneous and must be thrown out.
All done?
If you got most of them right, you're ready to move on. If not, reread the lesson and try the ones you missed again in a few days.
